Woodworking From A to Z
There are a bunch of industry terms to know for your woodworking
projects. Let’s take some from the top and see how familiar you are
with them.
Alligator Chuck
- A two piece bit brace that pivots on one end.
Alternate Top Bevel With Raker or ATB/R for short
- A pattern for a blade of a circular saw that features four beveled
teeth alternating with a raker tooth that removes left over material
from the wood cut.
Birds-eye figure
- A drawing-like shape on your wood, usually found with maple and
other types of trees. The shapes are made up of a lot of tiny dots
that resemble a bird’s eye. And these show up most often with rotary
sawn or plain lumber.
Case Hardening
- When abnormal drying occurs in lumber, it can cause defects. One
of these types of defects in the wood is known as case hardening,
occurring when the lumber dries too quickly, resulting in compress
outer wood layers and tension in inner layers.
Check
- When there is uneven shrinking in wood during the drying stage, a
check defect can occur. Checked wood has splits in it that run
lengthwise, right across the tree’s growth rings.
Closed Coat
- A type of sandpaper that is covered entirely with abrasive
particles. Since it can clog easily with sawdust, people usually do
not use this for woodworking projects.
Cope-and-stick joint
- This is a construction strategy with panel doors that are raised.
The tongues of the horizontal rails interconnect with the vertical
grooves of the stiles.
Countersink
- This tool lets you drill a hole so that the screw’s head ends up
being flush with the board’s face.
And wow - - this brings us only to the mid-C range of woodworking
terms! There are many more to go.
