Sony Ipod Headphone Alternative- The MDR EX51LP

With all the iPods and MP3 players out their more people are looking for a set of headphones to replace the ones that you get with your unit. Most of these lack bass and are hard to fit into your ears. Luckily Sony has come out with a replacement for those factory sets of headphones that just don’t get the job done. Let’s take a look at the EX51LP.

This set from Sony is something that should be a hit with Ipod users that’s for sure. This in-ear canal phone type is popular right now and that won’t change anytime soon. Bandwidth is 6-30,000 Hz with 16 ohm impedance. Toss in 100 db/Mw sensitivity and it looks like it should perform very well. It comes with a carrying case which is always great that way you can keep them protected and tangle free. A gold-plated plug also makes sure you get a good connection all the time and it also makes it look expensive even though these are very affordable. One of the first things I wondered about them was how they would fit in the ear as my old pair fit of iPod headphones fit well. These actually worked well and had no probably with fit or staying inside the ear. These also worked well when I went jogging and no problems especially if you want to do a little exercise. Their well constructed and the cord were long enough which is nice. I hate short cords as they become a problem for me. Taller people know exactly what I’m talking about.

Sound is always a big issue with people and these produce plenty of clear rich sound. Bass lovers will love these as it has plenty of that and through the spectrum from low to high range it performs well. Many iPod headphones usually let you down in the sound area, but this one was better than I expected. The EX51LP performs well on the sound side of it which is important. Comfort was very good and that is something many worry about. Over time it seems that factory IPods tend to hurt your ears after awhile, but didn’t have any trouble with these at all.
One thing that the Sony EX51LP does extremely well which many Ipod headphones don’t and that is feeling comfortable. I have to give them credit on that end of it. Great sounds and being comfort is two things that are very important. This model works well in both arenas’s which is important to almost everyone these days.

Looking over the Sony EX51LP several things will come right to you immediately. First is this set of headphones produce great sound and is a big upgrade from any factory Ipod headphones that you get. The comfort level is very high and being able to wear for hours is a big plus for iPod users. Third is the price. Many times these aftermarket headphones are overpriced, but these are very affordable and backed by Sony’s reputation. You definitely can’t beat that. My advice on the EX51LP is grabbing these and tosses those factory ipod ones in the desk drawer. You will get a better pair and much clearer sound coming from your iPod. Isn’t that what we want any way’s? If you’re looking for something little different than this is one pair that you need to try. I don’t think they will disappoint you one bit.

Sony MDR DS 1000- Surrounding Yourself with Great Sound

Surround sound seems to be the newest thing that people love to have in their homes and offices. This type of technology is also coming to the headphone arena as well. Once it becomes big it seems that is just a natural progression that you get. One model that seems to incorporate this very well is the Sony MDR DS1000 with surround sound. Many new ones are coming out with the surround sound, but let’s take a look at the DS 1000 and see how well it does.

At first glance at the Sony MDR DS 1000 the first thing you will want to grab is the plush pads that cover the ear cups. Just touching them you can tell this is going to be one comfortable set of headphones and it doesn’t disappoint in the area one little bit. I can see you wearing these for hours with no adverse effect at all that’s how comfortable these are. The over the head types of headphones seem to becoming rarer and it’s a shame, but this model goes back to that and is very adjustable. An 11 ½ feet cord means you will be able to travel around the room without any trouble at all. This is a plus especially if you’re doing other things besides just listening to music. I don’t know how many times a short cord means I have to keep taking them off and on to get other things done. This is annoying so the longer cord should greatly reduce this problem if not eliminating it all together.

The surround sound worked well on this as you hook up the digital processor that gives you the feel of music all around you. Clarity and output were good, but nothing that would totally blow you away which sometimes can be good in a way. Too much of a thing takes you away from enjoying the musical experience anyways. The surround sound worked nicely so I didn’t have any real complaints there. With audio out response bandwidth of 12-22,000 Hz and frequency response of 12 Hz-22,000 kHz the sound we got was really expected. One thing is for sure with Sony products you’re going to get a quality product and this is that. It works well and sounds very good and should make most users happy. Getting use to the surround sound will take the novice listener time to get use to.

Overall this surround sound unit from Sony does what it’s expected to do. With a mid range price it’s affordable for most people and that is a very good selling point for it, the DS 1000 does a very good job in all areas and especially on the comfort level. If you’re going to listen to music for hour after hour than you want something that is very comfortable, this model does that. Toss in surround sound and you have yourself a complete system that will take your listening to the next level. Now surround sound may not be for everyone and this may not be your cup of tea. The price makes it affordable to see if you may want to enter this new phase of the way we listen to music. I guess we will see if it really takes off. The DS 1000 though is a good starting point to see if it’s for you.
