If you already know that you want to open an online store, you most likely also know what products you intend to sell. If you want to become an online bookseller, you’re in luck. It costs nothing to open an affiliate account with one or more of the big online book distribution services. You can even open a boutique bookshop with affiliate programs that smaller publishing houses offer. They all make it easy for you, because they provide you with widgets that connect your site directly with their pre-organized and categorized book listings.
On the other hand, if you want to start a shop from scratch, you had better be able to afford it. You will need to hire lots of expert help. You will need experts in backend technology such as PHP. Then you will need to think about the layout and design of a smoothly running website. These things can’t be handled efficiently by a single individual.
If you want to sell bedding in your shop, for instance, you are going to have to start with an easily navigable homepage. If your customer is looking for a king quilt, he or she is going to have to be able to find it fast. He is also going to have a large selection of quilts to choose from.
Think of another product range – women’s fashion, for example. Just one brand will have dozens of categories, from girls shirts to skirts, dresses, shorts and many more. Then they will have dozens of styles to choose from. When you add them all up, you can see that building even a boutique women’s shop can be and organizational nightmare.
What would the budget for such an undertaking be? Start-up costs alone can run into ten thousand dollars or even much more. You need web developers, graphic designers, website designers and many more. Who is going to write all of your content? You can’t afford to hire cheap outsourced writers. Nothing says ‘amateur’ more than spelling and grammatical errors. If the homepage of your jewelry site says ‘men wedding bands‘ instead of saying ‘men’s, ‘ it makes you look bad.
The purpose of this article is not to make you give up. On the contrary, by all means, follow your dream. Just don’t overlook the realities. It is going to take a lot of hard work and money. It will be worth it, though, when your successful online business allows you to earn money while you soak up the sun on a tropical island.
