What to Look for in Coins
When you are collecting coins, you need to be cautious a little.
There are times when you need to be on the alert for bad deals, like
when you’re shopping for a used car and unfortunately are sold a
lemon. Same thing can happen here.
To help you avoid some coin collecting pitfalls, so that you’re not
left holding the bag - -a bag of coins worth much, much less than
you bargained for- - here are some tips from the pros:
A) When working with coin dealers, ask about credentials, seek
references and check them out by calling to see how their coin deals
worked out. Also check with local and outside authorities to see if
any complaints have even been files like the Attorney General’s
Office and the Better Business Bureau both in your state. Most
offices have websites online today to help with simple searches.
B) Do your homework! Before shopping for coins, find some coin
guides and study them before you head out. You can find great guides
at local bookstores and online at eBay.com and Amazon.com.
C) Be a savvy shopper! Don’t let a dealer or other coin seller
intimidate you with coin jargon. Learn some yourself and even if you
don’t know everything, take your coin guides along as back up. Point
out pages showing pricing and facts and open up discussions.
D) Be a side-liner first. Remember that phrase, “Only fools rush
in!” And sit back. Watch a few coin auctions on eBay, shop around
town at coin dealers and antique stores, but don’t buy. Instead,
listen to other shoppers. What questions do they ask? Do they buy
right away? Jot down notes and return home to study transactions,
dealer comments, fellow shopper comments, coins being offered and
prices.
