Treasure Hunt: Finding Coins
Collecting coins is a fun pursuit for people of all ages in
countries around the world. Not only is coin collecting a great to
increase your income and investment portfolio, it offers a great
gift idea for any occasion.
Regardless of where you seek your treasure, check out some of the
things coins generally have in common around the world. Coin most
often have:
- The denomination or value on them somewhere.
- An image like a portrait, country banner or other theme on the
front.
- The name of the country on them.
- An identifying mark to tell where it was made.
- The date or just year the coin was made engraved.
- A tiny mark of the crafter, like the designer’s initials.
- Info on both the obverse (front) and reverse (back) sides

You don’t need a treasure map to actually find cool coins to
collect. Here are some places to turn, some stones to look under in
your area to find where ‘X’ marks the spot:
1) Check old piggy banks! You can be surprised at what turns up
there: old wheat pennies, Buffalo head nickels and a whole lot more.
2) Check your change! People find lots of goodies right in the car
ashtrays, junk drawer loose change, in between the safe cushions and
all over the place. Look around and give your home, car, garage and
other areas a good cleaning to see what turns up. Might actually pay
you to clean, eh?!
3) Antique stores often have cool coin areas. Call, speak up and
ask. Then go take a look.
4) Check your mailbox and Sunday newspaper ads! Special coin
collecting offers appear all year long.
