Coins: Tidbits & Trivia
Did you know:
1) The words ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ is a motto that first began to appear
on coins in the U.S. during 1864. This was the era of the Civil War
in the USA.
2) That E PLURIBUS UNUM means one out of many? This term first
started showing up on coins in 1795 on the Liberty Cap-Heraldic
Eagle gold half eagle.
3) What we know coin collecting to be today is referred to as the
‘Hobby of Kings.’ History has it that this hobby was started back in
the fourteenth century with Petrarch.
4) The lowest coin currencies ever issued in the United States was
the half cent, minted during 1793 until and through 1857.
5) One of the largest coin collections in the world is housed at The
Smithsonian, called The Smithsonian Coin Collection in Washington,
DC. It contains roughly 850,000 coins.
6) There are many different types of coin collectors. Some are
called:
a) Country Collectors - There are subtypes of collectors in this
category. Some collectors seek coins from each country that issues
them. Others seek all coins from only one country.
b) Y ear Collectors – Some people try to collect one type of coin
printed every year like the Lincoln cent each year it was issued
from 1909 until today. Others seek collections of all coin in their
country per each year of issue. And still others seek coins
collection from multiple countries that issue annually.
