Coin Care Basics
Handling coins that you use everyday might seem like no big deal.
You might stash some in your car’s glove box or ashtray, toss some
in fountains for good luck, and jam some into vending machines for
snacks and beverages. However, when handling coins that you want to
collect, you need to use caution. There are some things you ‘should
do’ and some things you ‘shouldn’t do’ when handling your
collectables. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the basics:
1) First of all, you should never clean your coins. This can devalue
any rare coins you may have and other valuable ones in your midst.
Collectors LOOK for this, so skip the soap and water routine. Skip
using alcohol. Skip all cleaning, no matter how much you are
tempted. Cleaning solvents can turn coins different colors – like
green – and even affect other ones in your collection near them. So
DON’T do it! Leave should them ‘as is.’
2) Another should is: you should seek good coin protectors for each
coin. Look through your guides for various types on the market and
the benefits of using each. Choose based upon your budget and to
meet your collection needs.
3) Handling coins too much is not a good idea. Your fingers have
oils on them and dirt and other matter. If you want to show off, you
should make sure to handle the coins while they are protectively
shielded inside your coin sleeves or other protective devices.
4) You shouldn’t have your coins near any moist areas. Especially
for storing, make sure to have good ventilation or a humidifier if
needed. For example, do not store coin collections in a cold, damp
basement.
